2024 Brumby Concerto/Aria Competition

COMPETITION – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 9AM-1PM
Open to the students selected from area preliminary competitions
- Adjudicated by a panel from outside the SOM faculty in the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall.
- GSU Symphony Orchestra and GSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble directors may also serve as Ex Officio judges.
- Up to 3 (preferred) or 4 winners may be chosen and all winners will perform in a concert(s) in the Spring semester.
- Applicants have the option of performing with a collaborative pianist for the competition.
- Applicants must perform the exact same repertoire for this round as they did in the first round of the competition.

- Applicants who submitted their application and video link by the deadline will be considered. Area coordinators of the following areas will evaluate video auditions during these days and advance a portion of their entries to the competition.

Repertoire Selection Guidelines
Repertoire approval from the selected ensemble conductors is required during the prescreening process. Rentals will NOT be considered.
Options for Repertoire:
- Option 1: Choose a work owned by Georgia State.
- Option 2: Purchase at the student’s expense.

- Area Coordinators submit finalists to Alex Freund by March 1
ELIGIBILITY
- Georgia State full-time graduate and undergraduate music majors.
- Students who have performed as soloists with the GSU Symphony Orchestra or GSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble in the past as a result of winning the Brumby Competition are not eligible.
- Students graduating in the spring semester are encouraged to audition and, if selected, may return in the fall to perform at their own expense.
REPERTOIRE AND REQUIREMENTS
- Selections should be no longer than 15 minutes for orchestra or 12 minutes for wind ensemble.
- Vocalists may choose a single aria or a set of arias under 15 minutes in length.
- The applicant must have his/her repertoire choice approved by the ensemble director (GSU Symphony Orchestra or GSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble) prior to the audition.
- Applicants must provide 4 clean scores (no markings) to each phase of the competition, one of which must be an original published score. Vocalists, please tab the pages if you are using a compilation book or score.
- Pieces with multiple soloists are possible with prior approval from the ensemble director.
- Students will be judged on the quality of their performance. The judges’ decision is final.
- For the 2024 competition, students must choose repertoire that GSU already owns, or provide the print music for the soloist, ensemble and conductor at their expense.

- Inquiries for orchestra repertoire should be directed to Tamara Dworetz
- Students should confirm that the orchestral versions of their requested solos are available on public domain, IMSLP and/or the library. If the piece is not available on public domain, students should establish an account on Zinfonia, request a quote, and send a screenshot of the quote to Dr. Dworetz. Pieces that are not public-domain will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
