The School of Music operates in three buildings in the Fairlie-Poplar historic district:
- Standard Building: Houses classrooms, faculty offices and studios, rehearsal rooms, student and faculty lounges, and recording studios.
- Haas-Howell Building: School of Music administrative offices (5th floor), a state-of-the-art media and technology center (4th floor), group piano lab, and faculty offices.
- Helen Aderhold Learning Center: Located on Forsyth Street, opposite Haas-Howell Building, with instrumental and choral rehearsal rooms, as well as academic classrooms.
- Art and Humanities Building: Located at Gilmer Street and Peachtree Center Avenue, featuring the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall, Charles Thomas Wurm Lobby, Bill & Billie Lowery Family Green Room, backstage office, and Sue Sigmon Williams Artist Room.
- Rialto Center for the Arts: Venue for concerts by large conducted ensembles, including wind ensembles, orchestra, choirs, jazz, brass, and percussion ensembles.

Access Requests
Only School of Music Faculty and Staff may request keys or additional swipe access for students. Please speak to your professor about submitting a request.
SOM Space Reservations
Here is a tutorial on how to Access Outlook Calendars for School of Music Spaces. School of Music spaces are limited to music majors and students enrolled in music courses/ensembles. To reserve School of Music classrooms, meeting rooms, and chamber rooms, click the button below.
Lockers are available for music majors and students performing in School of Music ensembles.
- Request Form: Use the form at tiny.cc/somlockers to request a locker.
- Assignment: Lockers will be assigned by the Production Office during the first week of school in the Standard Building Lounge. Students auditioning for or participating in ensembles before classes start can request a locker earlier by emailing the Production Office at [email protected].
- Rental Fee: $20 for fall and spring semesters; $10 for summer semester. Payment is made through the GSU Marketplace, following confirmation from the Production Office. For payment, visit tiny.cc/somlockers.
- Size: Only request a locker size appropriate for your instrument(s).
- Removal and Notification: Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. After spring semester finals, remove your lock and contents or they will be confiscated and moved to the fifth floor of Haas-Howell. Notify Production Staff if you no longer need the locker.
- Non-Music Students: Lockers will be available to non-School of Music students enrolled in ensembles after the first week of the semester.
Practice Room Locations:
- Standard Building (7th, 9th, and 10th Floors): Available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Piano majors have priority for rooms with grand pianos.
- Rialto Center Lower Level: Additional rooms for percussion and jazz studies students. Written permission is required to access these rooms when classes are not in session.
General Rules (Applicable to Both Undergraduate and Graduate Students):
- No Food or Drinks: To protect the pianos, food and drinks are not allowed in practice rooms. Please use the student lounge areas.
- Respect the Pianos: Keep all belongings off pianos. Do not open or alter the pianos in any way. Report any piano issues to the School of Music Front Desk (5th floor Haas-Howell) at 404.413.5900, including the room number and a description of the problem.
- Safety Protocol: Do not cover the windows on practice room doors as per Campus Police Policy for student safety.
- Personal Belongings: Do not leave personal items unattended in practice rooms. The School of Music is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Unattended items may be removed by campus police or staff and taken to Lost and Found.
- Unauthorized Use: If you are aware of unauthorized use of practice rooms, report it to campus police or the Music Office.
First-Come, First-Served: If a practice room is vacant for 10 or more minutes, it may be used by another student on a first-come, first-served basis. However, if the original occupant returns within the reservation time, the room must be relinquished. Leaving items in the room does not count as occupancy.
Additional Notes:
- Lights: Please turn off the lights when leaving a practice room.
- Room Access: Do not allow others to use practice rooms without authorization.
Library Resources: The University Library offers a wide collection of books, scores, periodicals, CDs, DVDs, and online resources. Access the library catalog online via the “Catalog” tab on the University Library Homepage. Music-specific online resources are listed under “Databases by Subject.”
Materials Location:
- Scores and Books: Located on the fourth floor of Library North.
- Oversized Scores (Folio): Found on the fifth floor of Library South.
- CDs and DVDs: Available on the first floor of Library North.
- Online Scores and Streaming Audio: Access through the Classical Scores Library and streaming databases like Naxos Music Library, Classical Music Library, and Naxos Music Library Jazz.
The Media Center (located on the 4th floor of the Haas Howell building) is a resource for music study and listening, open to all Georgia State University students. It features:
- A piano lab available for student use whenever it is not occupied by a class.
- A technology classroom with 18 stations
- A multimedia seminar room with a Hi-Def 6.1 surround sound system
- An open area with 12 stations equipped with Digital Audio Workstations and MIDI keyboards
Students can use the Media Center for studying theory, aural skills, audio production, music notation, and sequencing.
The Center for Audio Recording Arts (CARA) is a complex of recording studios, post-production suites, computer music labs, and offices located on the 11th floor of the Standard Building and the 1st floor of the Haas-Howell Building. It supports the research, teaching, and service goals of the School of Music and the College of the Arts. CARA is accessible only to music industry, composition, and computer music students enrolled in relevant courses. Some music technology courses taught in CARA require a $75 laboratory fee, payable during the first week of the semester through Banner.
