ORCHESTRA AUDITION INFORMATION
At Georgia State University, we offer two orchestral ensembles that are open to both music and non-music majors. If you are interested in joining our orchestra program, auditions are required for the GSU Symphony Orchestra but not for the GSU Campus Orchestra. Please refer to the specific requirements for each ensemble, as well as detailed audition information and sign-up links, provided below. We encourage all students, regardless of major, to audition for our orchestra program and look forward to hearing your musical talents.

Non-Music Majors
GSU Campus Orchestra
If you’d like to register for the GSU Campus Orchestra, no formal audition is required, but you must have previous high school playing experience. A seating placement audition will take place at the start of the semester.
GSU Symphony Orchestra
Students who would like to perform in the GSU Symphony Orchestra should submit a video audition (requirements below) via email to Dr. Tamara Dworetz, Professor of Orchestral Studies, by the below deadlines. Scholarship opportunities are available for non-music majors who submit an exceptional video audition. Students who pass the video audition are then required to complete the Live Audition (under music majors) for seating placement. Students who have previously been accepted/performed with the GSU Symphony are exempt from the video audition, and only need to perform the live-audition.
Audition Requirements:
-
Video yourself performing 2-3 minutes from a solo, etude, and/or concerto that best demonstrates your musical and technical ability.
-
Email this audition video directly to [email protected] along with a few sentences about your musical background and why you want to join the GSU Symphony Orchestra.

We encourage you to submit your videos as soon as possible! You will be notified of audition results in no more than one week after your submission so that you may plan your class schedule accordingly.

LIVE AUDITIONS
All music major strings, regardless of concentration, are required to audition for the GSU Symphony Orchestra by performing the below excerpts at the live audition for a panel of judges. This in-person audition will take place the weekend before the first day of classes. For 2024, the auditions will take place August 23 & 24 in Haas Howell 150. Specific audition requirements are below. Based on audition results, Music Majors may be placed in Campus Orchestra or GSU Symphony Orchestra. Non-Music majors who are accepted into the GSU Symphony via the video audition must also complete this audition for seating placement.
