Theory Placement Exams
All incoming undergraduate and graduate music students are required to complete a Theory Placement Exam before registering for music theory and aural skills courses at Georgia State.
- Undergraduate Students: You must complete the exam prior to registering for your first semester. Accepted students will be notified of available in-person testing dates. Use the resource below to understand what’s covered and how to prepare.
- Graduate Students (Master of Music): You must complete the Theory Placement Exam virtually before the first week of classes. This exam determines whether you need to take MUS 6160: Review of Harmony, Form, and Analysis (offered online each Fall). Remedial coursework is required if needed but does not count toward graduate credit hours. Retakes are not allowed.
- To register for the graduate exam, contact Dr. Mark McFarland at [email protected], and be sure to email him upon completion so your exam can be graded promptly.
