The Georgia State School of Music is pleased to announce that Dr. Serena Scibelli will join the faculty as Assistant Professor of Violin, beginning in the fall of 2025. Dr. Scibelli, a distinguished violinist and passionate educator, will bring her extensive international experience and expertise in both performance and music education to the School of Music’s violin studio.
Dr. Scibelli’s appointment comes as part of the School of Music’s continued efforts to expand its world-class faculty. She succeeds a retiring faculty member, and her addition to the department is expected to enhance both the academic and artistic vibrancy of the program.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Serena Scibelli to our faculty,” said Dr. Stuart Gerber, Interim Director of the School of Music. “Her wealth of experience as a performer and educator, coupled with her passion for mentoring students, will have a tremendous impact on the growth and development of our violin studio. Dr. Scibelli’s dynamic career and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly enrich the musical lives of our students.”
Dr. Tamara Dworetz, Director of Orchestral Studies, shared her excitement as well, noting, “We are absolutely thrilled to add Dr. Scibelli to our GSU string team! Her ability to connect with students is unparalleled, and her artistry, pedagogy, and mentorship will be an incredible gift to our violin students and string/orchestra area!”
Originally from Italy, Dr. Scibelli has an active international career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, and educator. She has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls worldwide, including La Scala in Milan, the Wiener Musikverein in Vienna, and the Royal Opera House in Muscat. As a dedicated champion of contemporary music, Dr. Scibelli has premiered over 50 new works, furthering her commitment to expanding the violin repertoire.
Before joining Georgia State, Dr. Scibelli served as Assistant Professor and String Area Coordinator at Mississippi State University. She also held a faculty position at the University of North Georgia and has offered master classes and clinics at institutions across the U.S. and Europe. Her previous roles, alongside her ongoing outreach efforts, have cemented her reputation as a passionate advocate for music education and an influential mentor to young musicians.
Dr. Scibelli is eager to begin her new role at Georgia State, where she will oversee the violin studio and teach both undergraduate and graduate students. “I am honored and excited to join the Georgia State University School of Music,” she said. “My greatest passion is teaching and empowering students to grow into the best version of themselves, not only as musicians but also as global citizens. I am looking forward to building a studio that feels like family, where students support one another and grow together.”
A strong proponent of individualized instruction, Dr. Scibelli believes in helping each student discover their unique musical voice and preparing them for successful careers in the evolving music industry. “Georgia State’s vibrant community and the cultural energy of Atlanta make this the perfect place for such a journey,” she added.
Dr. Scibelli holds a diploma from the Conservatory L. Cherubini in Florence, where she graduated at the age of 18. She continued her studies with a Master’s degree from the Conservatory A. Steffani in Castelfranco Veneto, followed by a second Master of Musical Arts and a Doctorate in Violin Performance from the University of Georgia.
In addition to her academic and performance work, Dr. Scibelli serves as Development Coordinator and Interim Executive Director of HEART MUSIC, a Georgia-based nonprofit dedicated to advancing arts education and access.
