ATLANTA– The School of Music at Georgia State University is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Alexis Lee, a distinguished cellist and educator, to its esteemed faculty. Dr. Lee brings an extensive background in performance and education, enhancing the caliber of talent within the university.
Dr. Lee’s impressive educational background includes a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the Juilliard School, a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in performance from Boston University, where she studied under the tutelage of Rhonda Rider. Her diverse array of influences, ranging from acclaimed musicians Cecylia Barczyk to David Soyer, has shaped her into the consummate artist and educator she is today.
Originally from South Korea, Dr. Alexis Lee began playing the cello at age 11 after moving to the United States. Her musical journey quickly gained momentum with notable performances, including appearances at The World Cello Congress III, where she performed as a member of the Towson University Cello Ensemble at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall and in the 200 Massed Cello Ensemble, which took its performance at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Maryland. She furthered her orchestral experience as an active member of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra and York Symphony Orchestra, later appearing as a soloist in 2009 and 2013.
Dr. Lee’s expertise extends beyond solo performance, with significant contributions to chamber music and orchestral ensembles. She has collaborated with esteemed musicians and performed across the United States, showcasing her versatility and artistry on stage. As an educator, Dr. Lee’s dedication to nurturing young talent is evident in her previous roles at Belmont University and her involvement with nonprofit musical organizations.
Dr. Tamara Dworetz, Director of Orchestras at GSU, expresses her excitement about Dr. Lee’s appointment, saying, “We are overjoyed to welcome Alexis Lee to the GSU School of Music. She is a consummate artist and master teacher of all levels. Her passion for teaching is exceptional and she will be an incredible asset to our students, faculty, staff and greater GSU community.” Prof. Tania Maxwell Clements, Coordinator of the String Area and Viola Professor, adds, “The string area is delighted that Dr. Alexis Lee will be joining us as Artist Affiliate in Cello. She brings with her a wealth of artistry and pedagogical knowledge that we are excited to share with our students and the wider Atlanta string community.”
Expressing her enthusiasm for joining the School of Music faculty, Dr. Alexis Lee states, “It brings me great joy to be part of the music faculty at Georgia State University. Being a part of a student’s musical journey is the best part of my career and I am so excited to share and pass on the musical knowledge given to us by previous generations. In addition to her role at Georgia State University, Dr. Lee remains an active performer in the Atlanta music scene, serving as a member of the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and frequently collaborating with the Atlanta Opera Orchestra.
Dr. Alexis Lee’s appointment is significant for Georgia State.
