Dr. Jennifer Sengin, Associate Director of Choral Activities at Georgia State, is not only a highly sought-after educator, but also a performer. Sengin is a part of mirabai, a professional treble choir whose mission aims to enhance the artistic expectations of women’s choral singing by connecting powerful music of women, past and present; and performing, commissioning, and recording new and innovative musics that express the rich emotional terrain of a woman’s life. Under the direction of Dr. Sandra Snow, the choir recorded an album titled “Home in Me” in the summer of 2022 in East Lansing, Michigan and is excited to share its release.
Sengin states, “Singing in mirabai is one of the most rewarding professional experiences that I have ever had. It is otherworldly to sing in an ensemble surrounded by so many incredibly amazing and talented women! The repertoire reflects the rich complexity of a woman’s life and we get the opportunity to sing texts that show feminine strength.”
mirabai artists are professionals in a variety of music-related careers including music educators in schools, universities and professional singers, many of whom sang as undergraduate or graduate students in the Michigan State University Mosaic ensemble (formerly Women’s Chamber Ensemble). Inspired by the spirit of our namesake, the 16th-century mystic singer and poet who created her own destiny amid societal expectations to the contrary, each performer values the opportunity to share not only singing but mentorship and connectivity with women engaged in their own communities as agents of change for young women and the arts. As passionate advocates for music as a form of peacemaking, mirabai seeks to engage audiences in meaningful explorations of musics, texts, and conversation around contemporary issues of our time.
