Christopher Otts, a master’s student in jazz studies, recently received the second annual BMI Future Jazz Master Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a rising jazz star pursuing an advanced degree in jazz studies or performance.

“I have a lot of great mentors here at Georgia State. They’ve been extremely helpful in preparing me for what I want to do with my life, which is not only to be a professional saxophonist but also to teach at the university level and hopefully, one day, lead a jazz program,” Otts said. “I’ve known since I was in middle school that this is something I wanted to do.”

Otts released his debut album, “Layers,” last month. He maintains a private teaching studio where he gives private lessons to more than 40 students, in addition to his work as a teaching assistant in Georgia State’s School of Music.
