Carroll Freeman, Valerie Adams Distinguished Professor in Opera Studies
Carroll Freeman has directed over 170 productions and was named the Classical Singer Magazine’s 2010 Stage Director of the Year. He is also the Valerie Adams Distinguished Professor in Opera Studies at Georgia State University School of Music. A veteran of New York City Opera and Houston Grand Opera, he has performed with the Edinburgh Festival, Theâtre Bobigny-Paris, Atlanta Opera, Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. Mr. Freeman is the former Artistic Director of Mississippi Opera, Opera in the Ozarks and UT Opera Theater as well as the Co-Director of Des Moines Metro Opera apprentice program. He has been Stage Director at La Musica Lirica in Novafeltria, Italy; the Festival of International Opera, Americas, Campinas, Brazil; and Opera Aegean, Athens and Syros, Greece. He performed the role of Ottavio in Peter Sellars’ movie, Don Giovanni filmed at ORF-TV studios in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Freeman is also known for his CD, “H.M.S. Gilbert & Sullivan”, praised by CD Review as best classical CD. As a child, he performed in the NBC-TV “Bell Telephone Hour” and CBS-TV Peter, the Chorister on Look Up and Live.This summer Mr. Freeman will teach at Beveren Vocal Studies in Belgium and Musik Hochschule Lubeck.
